The Revised Edition of Mary Hill's popular book on the Geology of the Sierra Nevada published in April 2006. One of the California Natural History Guides, this volume makes a potentially dull subject come alive with clear descriptions of geomorphology, history, maps, drawings and color photographs.

Mary Hill tells the story of the magnificent Sierra Nevada - the longest highest, and most spectacular mountain range in the contiguous United States. She takes us from the time before the land which would be California even existed., through the days of roaring volcanoes, violent earthquakes, and chilling ice sheets, to the more recent history of the Sierra's early explorers and the generations of adventuresome souls who followed. For thirty years, the first edition of Geology of the Sierra Nevada has been the definitive guide to the Sierra Nevada's geologic history for nature lovers, travelers, hikers, campers, and armchair explorers. This edition offers new chapters and sidebars and incorporates the concept of plate tectonics throughout the text.

  • Gives detailed information on where to view outstanding Sierra Nevada geology in some of the world's most beloved natural treasures and national parks, including Yosemite.
  • Superbly illustrated with 117 new color illustrations, 16 halftones, 39 line illustrations, and 12 maps.
  • Features and easy-to-use, interactive key for identifying rocks and a glossary of geologic terms.

  • Geologic History of Middle California

Only recently has the astonishing modern theory of moving crustal plates enabled us to understand fully how the picturesque landscape of the San Francisco Bay Region and its surrounding areas has come into existence. In this book Howard tells the dramatic story, illustrated by clear, graphic sequential drawings: the continual remaking of the earths surface on a time scale so immense human minds can scarcely grasp it.

  • The Geomorphic Evolution of the Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada Landscapes Solving the Riddles in the Rocks

This book provides a new interpretation of the formation of Yosemite Valley and the entire Sierra Nevada range. Whereas previous interpretations said that the Sierra Nevada was a relatively young mountain range and that most of its deep valleys were carved by glaciers, this new view indicates that the Sierra is an old range and that most of the canyons and valleys owe their existence to mass wasting, or rockfall. Contrary to what most of us learned as the truth about the formation of the Sierra, Schaffer presents evidence that glaciers performed very little erosion.
Jeff Schaffer is a naturalist and Yosemite climber who started exploring the Sierra Nevada in 1962. He has hiked more miles and explored more Sierran terrain than any other past or present naturalist or geologist, including John Muir and Fran?ois Matthes.
