Fossil Hunter Kit:: Step 1

Fossil Hunter Kit:: Step 1

Fossil Hunter Kit:
Step 1: Choose a rock hammer
A typical fossil or paleontologist hammer is a chisel edged rock hammer. The chisel edge is used to pry apart layers of dirt, shale, or slate in which one finds the fossils. Sometimes fossil hunting is done in harder rock such as sandstone. Dinosaur bones are often found in sandstone. Sandstone doesn't have the layers of slate and shale so a pointed tip hammer works better.
Fossil Rock Hammer (required)
Generally speaking a 20 oz or 24 oz chisel edge rock hammer is the choice for fossils. In the case of sandstone, where one finds dinosaur bones, a pointed tip rock hammer works better. The Estwing Supreme 13 oz Pointed Tip Rock Hammer is a great choice since the tip has more taper than 14 oz or 22 oz rock picks.
