The basic gold testing procedure is to make a small scratch test of the sample metal you are testing on the test stone. Drop a few drops of the test acid on the sample and observe it. If the quality of the gold is equal to or greater than the karat quality rated on the test acid the acid will not effect the sample. If the tested metal is not gold or is of a lower purity than the quality rated on the test acid the acid will destroy the sample. An optional method is to make two scratches on the stone, one with the sample metal being tested and another with a test needle of known purity gold. When you apply the acid you observe both scratches to see how they compare.

Includes the 10k, 14k, and 18k testing acids along with the 2" x 1 1/2" test stone.

  • Mineral Hardness Scale Ruler

The Mineral Hardness Ruler is a stimulating visual aid, educates in one phase of mineralogy, and provides the standard ruler measurement scales needed in classes.

Rockhounds, mineral enthusiasts, students, teachers, geologists, and any one interested in rocks and minerals will find the Mineral Hardness Ruler a handy visual aid for quick information on mineral hardness.

The two-sided, flexible, glossy, vinyl ruler consists of five scales: three measurement scales and two mineral hardness scales. The measurement scales are in standard ruler measurements of tenths of inches, sixteenths of inches, and millimeters. Mohs' relative hardness numbers are integrated into the inch scales, while a separate scale exists for an absolute mineral hardness scale by Rosiwal.

On one side of the ruler are pictures of the ten common minerals, in full color, selected by Mohs for his relative hardness scale. On the reverse side of the ruler are six common items with their relative hardnesses. These items, along with known minerals, can be used as a handy field kit to test the relative hardness of an unknown mineral.

Hardness is one property of a mineral that can be used to distinguish among similar minerals. A given mineral can scratch any other mineral of the same or softer hardness. Over a hundred years ago, the German mineralogist Frederick Mohs devised the relative hardness scale that has found favor with mineralogists for over a century. Others, such as Rosiwal, formed absolute hardness scales using the same minerals as Mohs. For example, diamond, the hardest substance in Nature is not twice as hard as apatite, 10 versus 5, but over twenty thousand times as hard, 140,000 versus 6.5.

  • Fists Full of Gold : A Complete Guide To The Art Of Prospecting

A Complete Guide To The Art Of Prospecting

Yes, it's true, you too can prospect for and find your own gold, it's still out there! If you purchase only one prospecting book, this is the one you want to own.

For years, the pastime of small scale prospecting and mining for gold has been like a well-kept secret among a closed fraternity of friends, and sometimes information has been hard to find and acquire. This is the book that will open things up and tell you everything you need to know to find your own gold. Full of practical information and great illustrations, it is designed to be the one prospecting book you will never outgrow. If you are a beginner, it will tell you things you need to know to get started and find gold. However, even if you have twenty years of prospecting experience, you will still find a wealth of new information and tips in these pages. From equipment operations, to the geology of how gold deposits form, to the nature of coarse gold nuggets, this book takes a unique and different approach in teaching the "trade skills" of prospecting. It focuses primarily on the knowledge you need to find locations rich with recoverable gold. This information is critical because in the final analysis, no matter how well you operate your dredge, metal detector or other prospecting equipment, unless you can find the places where gold is located, your equipment cannot help you recover it.

  • BelOMO 20x Quadruplet Loupe Magnifier (Importer's 2nd)

Amateur Geologist is the licensed importer of the BelOMO loupes for North America. These BelOMO 20x Quadruplet Loupe Magnifiers have a minor blemish and I won't sell them as new.

They're just as good as new, there's never a problem with the lens and you save 20% more off our already low internet price.

    About the seconds:
    • Every now and again we receive a loupe that has a screw stripped. Or maybe I do it when I treat the loupe to prevent the screws from loosening. If it's on the pivot post then I just bag it up with a replacement screw and let you replace it.
    • Sometimes it's just a loupe that's ''escaped'' its box and got a little dusty on the desk. (I wipe them off but I don't claim that they're new since they were exposed to the Owens Lake dust.)
    • Maybe the lanyard got dirty with Owens Lake dust. (The Owens Lake dust is bad. Thanks LA). Just wash it or cut it off.
    • Maybe I grabbed one to quickly examine something now I've "used" it.
    • I might scuff a screw when I'm treating the screw.
    • I might have had too much coffee (never) and the screwdriver slipped and scratched the plate.
    • Sometimes the BelOMO factory may install one of the cover plates upside-down.
If a screw is stripped then you'll receive a replacement screw. Never have I had the threads in the shaft stripped but if it is I'll send you a replacement.

Anyway, the optics of the loupe are always "as new" from the factory. The loupe case just has a minor blemish and I wont to sell it as new.

    Limit one per customer.

You MUST enter the coupon code "2nd" when you add the loupe to your shopping cart to get the discount.

  • Valley Soft-Touch 20 oz Chisel Edged Rock Hammer

Valley Soft-Touch 20 oz Chisel Edged Rock Hammer

The Valley Chisel Edge Rock Hammer, sometimes called a Paleontologist's Hammer or Fossil Hammer, has a 20 ounce head and is constructed of one piece drop forged steel with continuous forging grain flow from head to shaft. The two-tone Soft-Touch Rubber cushioned grip is shock absorbent and non-slip. The Valley Chisel Edge Rock Hammer is very similar to the Estwing 20oz Chisel Edge Rock Hammer. It differs from the Estwing mostly in the design of the grip and it is a bit shorter. The chisel edge doesn't have as much bend or bow to it as does the Estwing Chisel Edge Rock Hammer. The Valley Chisel Edge Rock Hammer has a square faced striking head on one end and a chisel edge on the other. The chisel edge is used for splitting layered rock such as shale and slate into flat sheets, usually when hunting fossils. Made in China but it's high quality. We've sold over 1300 and never had a return. The Valley Chisel Edge Rock Hammer is a great tool for the professional or recreational geologist, paleontologist or any rockhound and will last you a life time.

  • BelOMO 10x Triplet Loupe Magnifier

    BelOMO 10x Triplet Loupe Magnifier

The BelOMO 10x21mm(.85") triplet loupe magnifier has a viewing area of 0.65 inch (17mm), much larger than the Bausch & Lomb Hastings Triplet Magnifier. The 3 elements making up this achromatic triplet provide a bright and clear view. The 10x power magnification provides the best magnification to depth of field ratio and is the most popular power for a hand held magnifier. The housing and cover are machined metal and coated with a matte black finish and assembled using flathead screws. Belorussian Optical and Mechanical Association (BelOMA), makers of sights for guided weaponry, camera lenses, and other optical components manufacturers these loupes.

We highly recommend this loupe. This is the lens we use all the time.

Don't let this price fool you. The BelOMO loupe is a FANTASTIC buy. These are quality lenses that stand on their own against the higher priced competition. Take advantage of the recovering Belarus economy and a military supplier finding other revenue streams in a capitalistic market. Over 10,000 other geologists, rockhounds, stamp collectors, botanist, surgeons, hobbyist and people from all walks of life have.

Unsure? We encourage you to just Google BelOMO and peruse the rich praise for this loupe.

Each BelOMO loupe we ship is custom treated to prevent the screws from coming loose with usage.
