Amateur Geologist, Inc :: Education :: Rock & Mineral Collections :: Fluorescent Mineral Short/Long Collection

Fluorescent Mineral Short/Long Collection
Fluorescent Mineral Short/Long Collection
Fluorescence is the emission of light that some minerals exhibit when exposed to ultraviolet light. Long wave and short wave ultraviolet lights are commonly used to cause fluorescence. The short wave light is higher frequency light than the long wave light. This difference in frequency causes the electrons to behave differently and thus may emit different color fluorescence.

The incoming ultraviolet light is absorbed; causing weakly held electrons in the crystal lattice to jump to higher energy levels. When the electrons settle to their original stable energy levels, energy is given off as fluorescence.

Weakly held electrons may result from atomic substitution (impurities) in the atomic structure or may be present without substitution.

The Belomo 10x handlens is definitely a wonderful tool. A Hastings triplet design that is built like a Swiss bank vault. Optics are superb (razor sharp and bright) with a much wider field of view than my Bausch & Lomb 10x Hastings - which for entomology is a big plus! My collection of hand lenses is fairly large and I also use stereo microscopes for my work, but the Belomo can always be in your pocket ready to use anywhere and enjoy at any time. Its heirloom sturdiness will provide many years of visual pleasure. My first order got lost in the mail and the great folks at Amateur Geologist didn't bat an eye and sent another which was very kind, proving that they're definitely there to help their customers. My sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to them for their fabulous service and wonderful products.
